5 Principles I Bring to Every Project I Take On By Steve Mezynieski

Over the years, I’ve had the chance to work on a wide range of projects. From large-scale excavation and environmental work to agricultural operations and historic property restorations. Each one comes with its own set of challenges, personalities, and stakes. But no matter the scope, I’ve found that success always comes down to a handful of core principles.

These aren’t just business values, they’re personal. They’ve guided me throughout my life, both professionally and privately. And they’re the same values I bring to every job site, every team, and every decision I make.

Here are the five principles that define how I approach every project I take on.

1. Do What You Say You’re Going to Do

I believe that your word is your bond. If I tell someone I’ll deliver, whether it’s a client, a vendor, or a community partner, I do everything in my power to keep that promise. Reliability isn’t just a professional skill; it’s a personal standard. That consistency has helped build success over decades, and I stand by it.

2. Respect the Land and the Legacy

Whether I’m clearing land, restoring a historic home, or managing agricultural operations, I approach each property with a deep respect for its story. I’ve always believed that we’re stewards, not owners. We have a responsibility to honor what came before us while building something meaningful for the future.

That mindset has been especially important in my recent work, where preservation and revitalization go hand in hand. It’s not just about bricks and beams. It’s about history, community, and legacy.

3. Lead from the Front

I don’t believe leadership happens from behind a desk. It happens on the ground, in the day-to-day rhythm of a project. I make it a point to be present. Early, prepared, and fully engaged. For me, setting the tone means leading by example: showing up when it matters, listening before deciding, and making sure every detail is understood before a direction is given.

You can’t lead well if you’re out of touch. And people remember how you show up. Whether you’re there to solve a challenge or simply to support the team doing the work. That presence matters. It earns trust, drives performance, and shows people that their work and their time are respected.

4. Surround Yourself with Good People

I’ve learned that no matter how much skill or vision you bring to a project, nothing gets done without the right team. Over the years, I’ve worked with some of the best people in the business. Craftsmen, engineers, preservation experts, and community leaders who care as much as I do.

I choose to work with people who bring integrity, talent, and grit to the table. When your team shares your values, the project benefits—and so does everyone involved.

5. Own Your Story—Don’t Let Others Tell It For You

Every project, every decision, and every relationship contributes to a broader narrative. And I believe it’s important to be intentional about the story you’re building. I’ve always approached my work with clarity and purpose, letting actions speak louder than words.

Owning your story means standing behind your values, being consistent in how you lead, and making sure the way you operate reflects what you believe. It’s not about attention. It’s about accountability.

That’s why I make it a point to share how I approach the work, not just the results. Because character isn’t something you talk about—it’s something you show, project after project.
